about

This was the only track on the album not initially requested by or dedicated to someone. I arranged this song for an internet covers competition where I had to choose out of three prescribed songs all containing the word ‘black’ in them. Scanning the already submitted entries I realised that choosing one of the songs which WASN’T “Blackbird” by the Beatles would put me in a much smaller pool of competition. I had never heard this song before but loved it instantly. Such great lyrical images. it’s harmonic simplicity meant lots of scope for interpretation so I set forth to produce this version, discovering a few new techniques in the process. “So did you win the competition?” I hear you ask. Well... upon preparing to submit the final mixed track only THEN did I notice the fineprint: Competiton only open to U.S. citizens! All that aside, it is now dedicated to the talented solo bassist Steve Lawson, my twitter pal who gave me some awesome ideas, including the sixth intervals in the intro. Looking forward to our next UK/Australia skype lesson. :)
