about

I first heard this song performed by Jeff Lang at music festival many years ago now and still clearly remember entering into the adrenalin fueled lives of those immortal characters ‘James’ & ‘Red Molly’ with absolute relish! I hunted down the original when I discovered it was one the favourite songs of my newest old friend, Dave Jenkins. I almost abandoned the idea, though, when I heard Richard Thompson’s driving, pounding guitar driven version. There was no way I could even hint at that kind of momentum, with just a bass and female voice. I persisted though, and I’m particularly happy with some of the more delicate textures surrounding James’ last speech to his beloved red-headed Molly.
